SEO Rankings: Get Some Help With Webalizer

Ever wonder how other websites that are like yours or ones that you want to design are rated in the search engines? You can determine how you are doing, based on how other websites are rated. Here’s how you do it.

Use Webalizer!

Webalizer is a great tool to see how your website is doing. There are quite a lot of sites that use it too. Interestingly enough, the webalizer directory gets installed in the root doc directory, so unless it is locked down with the “.htaccess” file, it is open to everyone. Including you!

Use Google and Webalizer to help you see what others are searching for, who is referring them and then use the search terms that you find in the other guys site and put them in a google search to determine the ranking of that site, relative to yours.

You need to know some key terms to search on. Try this:

Search for: usage_200807.html “total search strings” fishing

usage_200807.html is the terminology that webalizer uses to show the month and year
“total search strings” is how the search results appear. Not all Webalizer outputs have them.
fishing is easy subject. You can get the idea of what people are looking for. Substitute with your favorite phrase.

If you find that your webalizer output is public, fix that right away! Put the .htaccess file in and follow the instructions on this site. (search for .htaccess)

You can also use the “Cloud Tool” under Pages in this blog to see how your website looks to a search engine.

Enjoy!
